Description
Newspaper advertisement for Ida Cox at the Frolic Theater's Midnight Review. Birmingham News, December 19, 1924.
This series of attractions, which invited white visitors into Black Birmingham's leading vaudeville theater to witness some of the nation's top Black touring stars, proved immediately popular with audiences. Despite that success, D. L. McClendon, president of the Birmingham City Commision (and thus, effectively, mayor) declared the shows a "menace" and had them shut down after less than a month.
